The Railway Children (1970) BBC ONE, 1.00PM ★★★★
This charming version of E Nesbit’s story about three children whose father mysteriously disappears, forcing their mother to move to a cottage near a railway line, is part Enid Blyton-style romp, part paean to pre-war life in England’s countryside. Jenny Agutter plays Bobbie, the eldest of the trio, while Bernard Cribbins is the station porter they befriend. Dinah Sheridan and Sally Thomsett co-star.
Inside Out (2015) BBC ONE, 5.00PM ★★★★★
Pixar continues to tug at the heartstrings with this poignant and intelligent coming-of-age story. The action unfolds in two places at once: San Francisco, where 11-year-old Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) has moved with her parents, and inside Riley’s mind, where her emotions – Joy (a note-perfect Amy Poehler), Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust – are trying to make sense of the turmoil in Riley’s life and world.
The Revenant (2015) BBC TWO, 10.00PM; NI/SCOTLAND, 11.00PM ★★★★★
This magnificent revenge Western won Leonardo Dicaprio an Oscar at last. It follows the (embellished) true story of a 19th-century fur trapper who endures savage attacks from a bear and a fellow frontiersman, then claws his way across the frozen countryside to settle the score. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s direction is unflinching; Tom Hardy is excellent too.
