Mr Justice Warby High Court judge at centre of Green ruling has overseen many high-profile cases

When Mr Justice Warby was put in charge of a new list for High Court cases involving the media almost two years ago, Lord Justice Leveson described him as “the obvious choice” for the job. As head of the Media and Communicat­ions List he has presided over many highprofil­e media cases, which included Sir Philip Green’s now-abandoned attempt to prevent The Daily Telegraph revealing details of accusation­s against him of sexual harassment and racism.

Since being sworn in to the Queen’s Bench Division in June 2014, Judge Warby has presided over many cases in the public eye, most notably the libel action brought against Andrew Mitchell, the Tory MP, by a Downing Street police officer, Toby Rowland, who received £80,000 in damages.

That same year, 2015, Judge Warby dismissed attempts by the Manchester United footballer, Marcos Rojo, to keep his identity secret after he cheated on his wife with a woman he had accused of £100,000 blackmail.

The judge also ruled against Mr Mitchell’s former House of Commons colleague Tim Yeo over an undercover investigat­ion that caught the MP offering to lobby for law changes in exchange for cash.

A year later, Judge Warby presided over the conclusion of a long-running legal battle in which a married celebrity couple were granted an injunction over a threesome with another couple.

In one of his first cases as head of the Media and Communicat­ions List, Katie Hopkins, the commentato­r, was forced to pay Jack Monroe, a blogger, £24,000 in damages over defamatory Twitter posts.

In a landmark “right to be forgotten” ruling last year, Judge Warby ordered Google to remove search results about the criminal conviction of a businessma­n two decades ago.

And, just this week, in a case with echoes of that brought by Green, the judge imposed an injunction preventing an ex-employee of “Magic Circle” law firm Linklaters disclosing details of the “ongoing struggle” he accused it of having “with women in the workplace”.

Another hearing into the matter is scheduled for Monday.
