Rear Window (1954) FILM4, 5.00PM ★★★★★

 Wonderful in its simplicity and compelling in its execution, this film belongs in the first rank of Alfred Hitchcock’s canon. The director presents a vignette of life through the lens of photographer LB “Jeff ” Jeffries (James Stewart), immobilised by a broken leg. Events take an odd turn when he witnesses strange activities that suggest that a neighbour may have murdered his wife.

Drive (2011) SYFY, 10.30PM ★★★★

 With its glistening cinematography and synthy score, Nicolas Winding Refn’s thriller about a stuntmanturned-getaway driver is as chic as they come – a neon-lit pastiche of old-school noir, constructed like a fairy tale. When the hero (Ryan Gosling), known only as “The Driver”, encounters Irene (Carey Mulligan), his life starts to career out of control. This is an absorbing piece of film-making.

Se7en (1995) ITV4, 11.15PM ★★★★★

 Gluttony, avarice, envy, sloth, wrath, lust and pride: the seven deadly sins are explored graphically, and imaginatively, in this gloomy thriller from director David Fincher. It follows a detective (an outstanding Morgan Freeman) and his rookie partner (Brad Pitt) on the hunt for a maniac who kills those guilty of the vices. It’s brutal and gripping, with an ending you won’t forget. Gwyneth Paltrow co-stars.
