Jury Duty can deliver spoils

- By Marlborough

In a race as competitive as the Randox Health Grand National, it is astonishing that one trainer, Gordon Elliott, holds such a strong hand today.

Among his 11 runners is Tiger Roll, who stands on the cusp of racing folklore by becoming the first to win back-to-back Nationals since the legendary Red Rum, with 12st on his back, brought Aintree to a roaring crescendo 45 years ago.

Certainly, many observers will be willing him home and he does look to have a wonderful opportunity, as he has appeared to be better than ever this season. But there can be no underestimating the task awaiting him. It is one that many have attempted yet failed.

For that reason, my idea of the winner is Jury Duty, who

also resides in Elliott’s stables in Co Meath. He has pace and yet also possesses stamina; two vital components here. I believe that we are only just beginning to see his true ability emerge and, in Robbie Power, who rode Elliott’s first Grand National winner, Silver Birch in 2007, he has a master tactician as his guiding light.

The race has become ever more competitive as prize money has risen. Long gone are the days when half the field could be ignored because they were simply not good enough.

The shortlist is not so short these days and positive mentions must be given to Rathvinden, a class horse and proven stayer, Go Conquer, a big price at 50-1 for a horse that should be built for the demands of this race, and Lake View Lad, who gallops, stays really well and jumps for fun.
