Brazil court backs LGBT rights law

The supreme court in Brazil has ruled in favour of making homophobia and transphobia crimes equivalent to racism, amid fears that Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right president, will roll back LGBT social gains. Racism has been a crime since 1989, with jail terms of up to five years. The judges said homophobia should be framed within the racism law until new legislation can be passed by congress.
