RESCUE OF HAWKER AND GRIEVE

SAVED IN MID OCEAN

-

AVIATORS PICKED UP BY DANISH STEAMER.

Mr. Hawker and Lieut.-commander Mackenzie-grieve are safe. This good news came early yesterday in the shape of a Lloyd’s message, which stated that the missing aviators had been picked up by the Danish steamer Mary. Shortly after noon the Admiralty issued the following statement: This morning a report has been received from the coastguard station at the Butt at Lewis that the Danish steamer Mary, eastward bound, reporting having saved hands of Sopwith aeroplane. An attempt is being made to intercept this steamer as she passes the North of Scotland. About two p.m. the Air Ministry issued an additional message: The Admiralty reports: “At about nine o’clock this morning the coastguard station at the Butt of Lewis received a visual signal from the Danish steamship Mary, eastward bound, which stated, ‘Saved hands Sopwith aeroplane.’ In reply to a signal from the station, ‘Is it Hawker?’ the answer came, ‘Yes.’ Steps have been taken to intercept the vessel and to confirm the report.” Then followed several hours of expectation, as it was not known for certain that the Mary would he intercepted, but about six p.m. doubt was removed by the issue from the Air Ministry of the following: The Admiralty reports that the destroyer Woolston has intercepted the Danish steamer Mary, and has embarked Hawker and Grieve. They will be landed at Thurso.

IN LONDON TO-MORROW.

At 8.45 last night we received the following further official communiqué: The Air Ministry announces that the Admiralty reports that Mr. Hawker and Commander Grieve have arrived on board his Majesty’s ship Revenge, where they will sleep to-night. They will leave to-morrow (Monday) to catch train which is due to arrive at King’s-cross at seven p.m. on Tuesday. They were picked up in lat. 50deg 20min N., long. 30deg W., having alighted close to the steamer owing to a stoppage of circulation in the water-pipe between the radiator and the water-pipe water-pump. The aeroplane was not salved.

Both Mr. Hawker and Commander Grieve are in perfect health.
