China accuses US of trying to ‘colonise global business’

- By Natasha Bernal and James Cook

CHINESE state media has accused the US of seeking to “colonise global business” by targeting telecom equipment giant Huawei and other companies in the country with sanctions.

Lu Kang, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, accused American politicians of “fabricating various lies based on subjective presumptions and trying to mislead the American people”.

The state-owned China Daily newspaper said US concerns about Hikvision, the Chinese surveillance equipment maker, were about gaining the “moral high ground” and promoting Washington’s political agenda. “In this way, it is hoping to achieve the colonisation of the global business world,” the newspaper said.

Activists have urged the US to sanction China over the repression of Muslim ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, where Hikvision’s tech has been used.

The New York Times reported that the firm might be placed on the US’S “entity list,” severely restricting its ability to do business with US companies. Huawei was added to the list last week.
