‘We cut road traffic fatalities by 50pc’
What was the issue?
According to Transport for London figures, between 2005 and 2009 the average number of fatalities was 211 a year.
What did he do?
He helped oversee the rollout of 20mph zones across London, to the extent that a quarter of all the capital’s roads were 20mph by 2015. He also introduced average speed cameras on dangerous stretches of road.
What happened?
In 2016, the year Mr Johnson left office, there were 116 fatalities in Greater London, equivalent to a fall of 45 per cent. Over the same period, traffic fatalities fell by 36 per cent nationwide.
What has happened since?
According to the most recent figures, there were 131 fatalities on London’s roads in 2017, nearly 10 per cent more than when Mr Johnson was in office.
