School for Scoundrels (1960, b/w) BBC TWO, 3.15PM ★★★

 Terry-thomas is once more at his sublimely caddish best in this delicious comedy. Henry Palfrey (Ian Carmichael) feels like a weed and a dupe – until he comes across a special college course that promises to teach him how to woo women, get the upper hand against bounders such as Terry-thomas’s Raymond Delauney, and generally end up a winner at the great roulette-wheel of life.

Journeyman (2017) FILM4, 9.00PM ★★★★

 Paddy Considine directs, writes and stars as Matty Burton, a world boxing champion from Sheffield who sustains a cranial trauma that throws his entire life into a daze. The real battle here is his struggle for recovery, for the sake of wife Emma (Jodie Whittaker) and their baby. It’s a subtle piece about masculinity at its most fragile, and it deploys an arsenal of honest emotions without show or sentiment.

Heat (1995) SYFY, 10.50PM ★★★★★

 Thanks to the unprecedented and irresistible pairing of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, Heat is a tautly plotted and superbly acted thriller from director Michael Mann. Its premise is very simple: a dedicated cop (Pacino) is on the trail of a ruthlessly efficient thief (De Niro, in his last truly great role), who lives by one callous motto: “Never have anything in your life that you can’t walk out on in 30 seconds.”
