Waller-bridge wins 11 Emmy nominations for Fleabag
THE first series of Fleabag failed to pick up an Emmy nomination, as US audiences took time to warm to its very British charms.
No such problems with the second – and final – series, which yesterday garnered 11 nominations including outstanding comedy series, in a triumph for Phoebe Waller-bridge, its creator, recognised for her writing and also in the leading actress category as the eponymous Fleabag, a character she devised for a one-woman play at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Her female co-stars were also honoured: there were nominations for Sian Clifford, Olivia Colman, along with Fiona Shaw and Kristin Scott Thomas in guest roles. But Andrew Scott, who became a heart-throb thanks to his role as the “hot priest”, was overlooked.
The nominations list was full of British women, including Jodie Comer and Fiona Shaw (again) for Killing Eve, the show created by Waller-bridge but now in the hands of another writer, Emerald Fennell.
Game of Thrones set a new record for the most Emmy nominations in a single year – 32 in all. They included five acting nominations for British actresses Emilia Clarke, Maisie Williams, Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey and Sophie Turner.
Bodyguard was included in the outstanding drama category but there was nothing for its star, Richard Madden. Killing Eve is in the same category.
Hugh Grant was nominated for his performance as Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal, along with Ben Whishaw in a supporting role as Thorpe’s lover, Norman Scott.
The winners will be announced on Sept 22.
