SIR – Someone inform the chief constable of Gloucestershire that trying to make police “more approachable” by downgrading their uniform (report, July 18) isn’t the constabulary’s prime function.

Maintaining the peace is – and that is easier to do if you don’t look like a delivery driver in a baseball hat. Ken Orme
