Stephen King’s It (1990)

 With It Chapter Two soon to be released, it’s a good time to revisit the first adaptation of Stephen King’s 1986 novel. In a sleepy town in Maine – where else? – a group of outcast kids band together as the “Loser Club”, and are tormented by a terrifying monster that manifests as a clown called Pennywise. Tim Curry is superb as the villain, attended less by shonky jump-scares than creeping menace.
