Charging electric cars

-

Sir – A target of 3,000 rapid charge points for electric cars by 2024 is very welcome (report, September 10).

On the basis that there will be a total of 5,000 units taking 30 minutes for a full charge, this will charge 240,000 cars a day. However, there are at least 67,000 petrol/diesel pumps in Britain, with the capacity to fill up millions of vehicles daily. With full charges lasting a maximum of 250 miles, we still have a long way to go before electric vehicles become a viable option. Duncan Rayner

Sir – The Government has announced that an extra £400million of taxpayers’ money will be spent to increase the number of charging points for electric vehicles (EVS). Why?

Only the rich can afford an EV, yet they get up to £4,500 in grants towards it, and free electricity and parking in some council areas. EVS are also exempt from road tax and the London congestion charge.

The cost of the EV charging point network should be funded by the manufacturers and an annual fee paid by the EV owner. Clark Cross
