ADMIRAL AND INSURGENTS.

-

At six in the morning, as the battalion of Arditi stood by to attention, British troops embarked on British and American ships. The French troops followed and embarked silently on the cruiser Condorcet at 10. Towards 1pm, there was an alarming rumour of a concentration of troops at Volosca and Abbazic to march on Fiume. The rumour was false. There was a gathering of some additional troops, but no Italian general would dream of ordering his men to attack. A dramatic scene took place on Sunday. Admiral Casanova arrived with two torpedoboats and anchored outside the port. He proceeded in a submarine chaser to the Dante Alighieri, where he had his flag hoisted. He ordered the officers before him, and was going to make them a communication when, at the same time, Maj Reina boarded the ship with his Arditi. “I have come to execute the orders of the government,” said the admiral. The admiral, surrounded by Arditi, was conveyed ashore, where he was taken in a car to the governor’s palace and spent the night under arrest. On Monday he was sent back to the Italian lines.
