The “Swiss Miss” sensation was world No 1 for a total of 209 weeks through her illustriou­s career, starting in March 1997, when she became the youngest top-ranked player in history at 16. She had become the youngest grand slam singles champion that century when winning the 1997 Australian Open. But, aged 22, and a five-time slam champion, she retired, citing pain and injuries. In all, she would “retire” three times.
