Player ratings Japan

- By Kate Rowan in Yokohama

8 15 William Tupou

An influential part of Japan’s early attacking wave. Selfless in allowing colleagues to look their best.

8 2 Shota Horie

Veteran of the 2015 win over South Africa and the victory against the Irish, made a lung-busting contribution.

9 14 Kotaro Matsushima

Scored Japan’s first try, showing the poacher’s instinct that completed a hat-trick in the tournament opener against Russia.

6 3 Koo Ji-won

Gave the Scottish front row a tough time as he helped to keep the scrum low but succumbed to a rib injury on 21 minutes.

9 13 Timothy Lafaele

Lively in attack and defence from early on and put his mark on the game with two try assists: for Matsushima and Fukuoka.

8 4 Luke Thompson

The 38-year-old was rolling back the years in the second row against quality Scottish opponents. Tackled like a demon.

7 12 Ryoto Nakamura

Ran fabulous lines to allow the players outside him to shine. By Japan’s fitness standards faded a little towards the end.

7 5 James Moore

Huge work-rate in the engine room, may not get the same accolades as those outside him but flung off defenders. Muscular performance.

9 11 Kenki Fukuoka

Ensured his place as a national treasure as he pounced on Lafaele’s kick through to score his side’s third try. Then added another.

8 6 Michael Leitch

Totemic and relentless performance from the New Zealand-born captain. Key at slowing down Scottish ball and kept his side inspired.

8 10 Yu Tamura

Came into his own in the second half during the Scots’ fightback. Clever, seemed to be often thinking several plays ahead.

8 7 Pieter Labuschagne

South African-born player brought heft and power to the pack but was quick on his feet. Fast and furious at the breakdown.

9 9 Yutaka Nagare

Grew into the first half as he was fed excellent ball. Clinical in his link play. Would be a target for a European club if he was a bit taller.

9 8 Kazuki Himeno

Bamboozled the Scots in the first half with his hard running and tough tackling. Surely will be sought after by overseas clubs.

8 1 Keita Inagaki

Fabulous fitness levels thanks to gruelling conditioning. Looked like a back as he ran through for his first-half try.
