Little piggy that went all the way to … Wagamama

- By Helena Horton

MOST vegans try their best to save animals from the slaughterhouse by sticking to a plant-based diet. However, the bar has now been raised after an activist paid to “save” a pig from a farm and move it in to her London flat.

But while Alicia Day, 31, treated the animal, which she named Jixy Pixy, to restaurant meals, shared baths and took it on long weekend walks, they have been forced to part ways after her landlord found out and evicted her.

The committed vegan has been criticised by animal welfare campaigners, who suggested she showed a lack of judgment over how to care for the pig.

Although she does not regret her decision to adopt the pig, she admitted she could not give it the care it needed and the animal was eventually taken by the RSPCA to go to a “suitable home”.

She paid £30 for the animal and £400 for a taxi to bring him to her twobedroom Ealing flat from a farm in Exeter, Devon.

“I can’t save them all, but I thought I would save one,” she explained. “Anything for my baby.”

Her landlord is thought to have seen her many posts about the pig on her public social media before evicting her, a week after her purchase.

Ms Day then called the RSPCA for help and officers took the pig away to a sanctuary in Kent.

During their time together the New York native had taken Jixy Pixy on the tube and walked it around Ealing Broadway on a lead, becoming something of a local curiosity.

She said: “People were asking me questions and taking pictures and phoning friends to say there is a pig in Ealing. That’s when I got the idea that maybe this will highlight that pigs are not just food.”

After her eviction she realised she could no longer keep the animal, since she is now living in a hotel and being financially supported by her sister.

Before giving Jixy Pixy up, she took it for a farewell meal at Wagamama.
