MP candidate quits in rape row

- By Henry Bodkin

A CONSERVATIVE candidate and former BBC radio presenter has announced he is standing down after Boris Johnson condemned his comments suggesting women should “keep their knickers on” to avoid being raped.

Nick Conrad, who has been selected to fight Broadland in Norfolk, said he quit because the media attention over his “ill-judged comments” during a radio discussion about a high-profile rape case had become a “distraction”. He also said in the radio debate in 2014 “there’s a huge amount of will and intent, and it’s very difficult for many men to say no when they are whipped up into a bit of a storm”.

On the campaign trail in Scotland yesterday, Mr Johnson said: “He has apologised long ago but I can’t stress that those comments are completely unacceptable.”
