Couple stoned to death for cross-caste marriage

An Indian couple who married outside their caste were stoned to death by the woman’s relatives, police have said.

The woman fled her home in Karnataka state after the marriage three years ago but returned this week to visit family. Guru Shanth, of the local police, told AFP they were spotted by villagers, who told the woman’s brother and he gathered a mob to stone them.

United Nations statistics suggest about 1,000 so-called “honour killings” happen in India every year.
