Jake Gyllenhaal lays his body on the line for a boxing drama that’s so predictable, you could set your watch by it. If only someone had devoted equivalent stamina to the screenplay, we might have an actual movie on our hands. Never mind: the action, at least, is rousing, as Gyllenhaal’s Billy “The Great” Hope learns the art of subterfuge from a new coach (Forest Whitaker). Rachel Mcadams co-stars.
