Raab meets family of Harry Dunn and vows to get justice
DOMINIC RAAB has promised justice for the family of Harry Dunn after a police chief said the wife of a US spy will be charged “any time soon” over the teenage motorcyclist’s death.
The Foreign Secretary sat with the Dunn family for an hour yesterday and urged Anne Sacoolas to “do the right thing” and return to the UK.
The Dunn family and the Foreign Secretary have been at loggerheads in recent months over his handling of the case, with the family launching a judicial review against the Foreign Office and campaigning against Mr Raab being re-elected as an MP.
Mr Raab said: “The talks today were designed to clear the air.
“We are united in our determination to get justice for Harry.
“The Government will do everything it can.”
Ms Sacoolas has admitted to driving on the wrong side of the road and colliding with Mr Dunn near RAF Croughton in August, but claimed diplomatic immunity and fled the country in the aftermath of the crash.
Mr Raab reached out to the suspect personally, saying: “I appeal to Anne Sacoolas herself to do the right thing.
“If there is a charging decision from
‘I appeal to Anne Sacoolas herself to do the right thing … I urge her to come back to the UK and cooperate’
the Crown Prosecution Service, I urge her to come back to the United Kingdom and cooperate with the criminal justice process.”
Nick Adderley, the chief constable of Northamptonshire Police also met with Harry’s family. He too had been a target of their fury, with the family calling on him to resign.
After the meeting, Mr Adderley told reporters: “We are optimistic that a charge is going to be coming any time soon, once that charge is out there then I will be leading how we move forward in terms of extradition.
“If there isn’t an extradition application I will want to know why.”
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) was handed a file of evidence on November 1 after police interviewed Mrs Sacoolas in the US.
“But even if the CPS decides to bring charges and an extradition request is sent to the US, the government is likely to ignore it, citing her diplomatic immunity.
Last night, Radd Siegler, a spokesperson for the Dunn family said: “One of the things that came across loud and clear for us … is that both Andrea Leadsom (the MP for Northamptonshire South) and the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab would like this lady to come back too, and that’s not something that we had heard.”
