Cats doesn’t get the cream after bad reviews

- By Camilla Turner

THE film adaptation of Cats has made just £3.4million in the UK on its opening weekend, less than a quarter of the latest Star Wars film’s takings.

The film, which has a star-studded cast including Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson and Jason Derulo, has received a string of negative reviews.

It was directed by Tom Hooper, who made Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech. He has admitted that he only just managed to finish editing it before its world premiere in New York last

Monday, and has since revealed that alterations to the visual effects have been made, partly in response to heavy criticism.

Clips of the film, which was made by combining computer-generated imagery (CGI) and actors, were roundly mocked when they were released online ahead of the film.

David Farrier, a filmmaker, described the trailer as “truly one of the most disgusting unsettling awful things I’ve watched in a long time”.

When the film was released, it was almost unanimously slated by critics, with The Daily Telegraph’s Tim Robey calling it a “sinister, all-time disaster from which no one emerges unscathed”, giving the film no stars.

James Corden, one of the actors who starred in Cats, told BBC Radio 2 that he had not yet seen the film. “I haven’t seen it but I’ve heard it’s terrible!” he said, referring to the reviews.

Meanwhile, the latest Star Wars film, The Rise Of Skywalker, has made a solid start at the UK and Ireland box office. The final instalment of the long-running sci-fi saga took £20.9million during its opening weekend.
