Weather beautiful ... wish you were listening

-

sir – Jo Platt, my former MP, has been chosen to sit on the Labour commission to determine what went wrong at the election (report, December 23).

Perhaps she could save Labour money it can ill afford, by reviewing some emails that I sent to her in the year before the election.

My last email was sent in October from the beautiful Italian town of Matera, highlighting the fact that you can love Europe but dislike the EU.

I had become increasingly frustrated by the fact that she continued to ignore the wishes of the vast majority of her constituents by repeatedly voting against Brexit. I indicated that, unless she chose to listen to the electorate, they would have their say and she would lose her seat.

James Grundy, our new MP, popped in to Wetherspoon’s in the week before the election, and was more than happy to listen to the locals. Leigh will be all the better for the latter approach. Paul Mercer

sir – The claims of working-class roots by the Labour leadership contenders (report, December 23) read like a Monty Python sketch.

“Brought up on council estate in Northern city? Luxury, we lived in a paper bag”.

“What your own paper bag? Bliss, we lived in a pothole in road.” Gerry Simpson

sir – Richard Burgon rightly says that, in the latest election, Jeremy Corbyn gained more votes than Tony Blair in 2005 (10.3 million to 9.6 million). What he forgets is that the population of the United Kingdom in 2005 was just over 60 million. Today it is 67.5 million. Anthony Pearson
