Your home really is your castle as size trumps location on property buyers’ wish list poll

♦ Kirstie and Phil were wrong about the most important consideration when buying a home as it seems size matters more than location to propertyhunters, a survey has found.

For years house-buyers have been told that “location, location, location” is the most critical factor, with the dictum even giving the long-running Channel 4 show, presented by Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer, its title. However, a poll by

Barclays Mortgages of people planning to move in 2020 found that the most important aspect was the size of a new home, with a third (33 percent) saying it was their main concern.

Of the 2,000 people surveyed, two fifths (42 per cent) said they would choose to own a larger property over staying in their current area.

More than a third (38 per cent) said they regretted not moving into a bigger property than the one they chose.

A bigger kitchen was the feature that people said they would prioritise next time they moved, followed by en suite bathrooms and larger bedrooms.

Hannah Bernard, head of mortgages at Barclays, said: “It’s important to think about whether you need more space in a new property or if you can simply extend your home to suit your needs.”
