Edward Scissorhands (1990)
CHANNEL 4, 12.20PM ★★★★★
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have been friends and creative partners ever since they collaborated on this suburban Gothic fairy tale. Depp gives one of his most sensitive performances here as Edward, a scientist’s creation with scissors for hands who falls for the daughter (Winona Ryder) of an Avon lady. His inability to touch the ones he loves is powerfully symbolic; Burton’s film is a true gem.
Some Like It Hot (1959, b/w)
BBC TWO, 3.00PM ★★★★★
When two musicians (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis) accidentally witness a mob hit in Chicago, they flee the state disguised as women in an allfemale band – but complications arise in the form of demure ukulele player Sugar Kane, superbly played by Marilyn Monroe. Billy Wilder’s comedy is, all at once, smooth, wacky and clever – and it boasts an (ironically) perfect last line as well. (2006)
ITV, 10.15PM ★★★★
Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet and Jack Black get all warm and fuzzy for this festive romcom. The lovelorn pair Amanda (Diaz) and Iris (Winslet, playing, of all things, a Daily Telegraph columnist) agree to a house exchange (Los Angeles v English village). In their new locations, they meet prospective partners, Graham (Law) and Miles (Black) – but when the holidays end, decisions must be made.
