Royal portrait shows who wears the trousers now

- By Craig Simpson

PRINCE George has posed in tartan trousers with three other generations of his family for a portrait which appears to have cut short a royal tradition.

The six-year-old stood for a photograph with the Queen, the Prince of Wales, and his father the Duke of Cambridge in the throne room at Buckingham Palace before Christmas.

George is seen in the portrait of his great-grandmother – surrounded by the first, second and third in line to the throne – wearing a white shirt and tartan trousers, which could signal the end of a long-held tradition of royal children sporting shorts.

The prince has often been seen wearing shorter legwear – as is customary for young boys of the upper classes, while longer items have been traditionally seen as sign of greater seniority.

George has only been photographed in such a garment on rare occasions, including for official portraits.

He wore blue chinos in a 2018 family photo featuring his parents and siblings, which is believed to be the first time he wore trousers outside of his duties as a page boy at the weddings of Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie.

The young prince was also seen in a full navy suit for the Christmas Day church service at Sandringham.

In the new portrait the Queen stands in a white dress with a blue brooch, and is seen clutching a classic handbag as she is joined by three of her heirs. Charles sports a navy pinstripe suit in the photo, and is standing on a red-carpeted step alongside George.

William stands behind his grandmother, smiling, in a dark suit and navy blue tie, in only the second portrait of the four members of the Royal family together that has been issued.

The first was released in 2016 to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.
