Jes Staley, the chief executive of Barclays, was fighting to defend his credibility last night as questions raged over his links with Jeffrey Epstein. The 63-year-old said he “deeply regrets” his relationship with the late paedophile financier after it emerged that the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority were investigating their ties. Mr Staley told reporters: “I thought that I knew him well, and I didn’t.”
