Diamond wedding couple die in hospital hours apart

- By Izzy Lyons

A COUPLE who had recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary died within hours of each other after both contracting coronavirus.

Bryn Howells, 86, and his wife Pat, 80, passed away on Easter Monday at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Ynysmaerdy, Wales.

Their grandson said they were “totally devoted to each other” and had recently received a card from the Queen congratulating them on their 60th wedding anniversary.

“We are shocked and devastated at their death,” the couple’s grandson, Elliot Howells, said.

“There is almost a little bit of comfort knowing that they died on the same day a matter of hours apart.”

Mrs Howells died at 2am on April 13 and his grandfather later that day, at 7pm. The couple married in Salem Chapel, Porth, on Nov 14 1959 and went on to have four sons, two honorary daughters, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

They lived in Gelli in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales.

“They were totally devoted to each other and they did everything together,” their grandson said. “They were so proud of our family and supported everything we did. They’d be the first to buy tickets to a concert or a show any of us performed in and would be sat in the front row beaming.”

The couple had a long association with the Treorchy Male Choir.

Gareth Evans, the choir chairman, said: “Today is a very sad day as the Treorchy Male Choir mourn the passing of Bryn and Pat, who have been a big part of our family for a very long time. They were a lovely couple who will be sadly missed. To the family, we offer our deepest sympathy and would like to thank Bryn and Pat for being part of our lives.”
