EFL draws up plan to stage all 341 games remaining at 10 Championship stadiums

The English Football League is considering staging all its remaining matches this season at just 10 Championship stadiums, with chairman Rick Parry admitting it remains unclear when fans would be able to attend games again.

The EFL remains suspended due to the Covid-19 outbreak and Parry told supporters in an open letter yesterday that “matches are likely to be played without crowds” when football did resume, but should be broadcast live.

The Daily Telegraph can also reveal the EFL has discussed restricting the number of venues at which its remaining games would take place. The plan would see Championship, League One and League Two fixtures televised or streamed live from the same stadium on the same day as part of a scramble to complete all three divisions.

A source told The Telegraph: “They are talking about looking at using 10, 15 Championship clubs’ venues. And putting on, if necessary, three or four games a day on some of those pitches.”

There are 341 EFL matches remaining this season, including play-off games, and Parry last week told clubs they could be played across 56 days this summer. The Telegraph has been told that Plan A is for those fixtures to take place at all 71 EFL club venues – all but certainly behind closed doors.

Parry, who admitted in his letter that he did not know when it would be safe for football to return, stated yesterday: “The next few weeks will bring more clarity for our operational plans.”
