AND THE SANDALS TO MATCH... THIS SEASON IT’S ALL ABOUT FLATS
I’ll admit that sandals – flat ones, specifically – haven’t always been the most obvious objects of desire. They’ve existed almost outside of fashion, filed away under weekend and holiday shoes. But this summer, sandals seem sure to be our all-the-time shoes. Perhaps that’s why I’ve been daydreaming about good sandals the way I used to fixate on special handbags: intensely.
The ones I keep clicking back to are Proenza Schouler’s designs for Birkenstock. The New York designers’ take on the classic Arizona and Milano sandals have become the unofficial status-footwear of lockdown. You’ll recognise them by their distinctive top-stitching and omnipresence on top editors’ Instagram feeds.
Naturally, the Birks have competition. Let’s say your style is less “minimalist concedes to summer”, more “ruffles ruffles ruffles!” Then chances are you’re aware of Arizona Love. The brand’s signature Trekky sandal is a utility style with a playful finish in its bandanawrapped straps.
Also tempting? Ancient Greek Sandals’ collaboration with Le Sirenuse Positano. The wavy-strapped Clios and Nikis have just the
dolce vita vibes your summer dresses are calling out for. ATP Atelier’s buckled Ceci slides show the smarter side of sandals. And Dune London’s Loupe slides, a bestselling style from 2019, are back in stock (looking just as Hermès-y as ever).
Actually, scratch that. I’ve just remembered the real sandals of summer. Ugg’s Oh Yeah slides, with their Muppetfluffy straps and footbeds, are 90 per cent cloud. Consider them slippers on an outdoor sole. Who could ask for more? Except for a pedicure as soon as possible.
