Mayor may reopen case of drowned refugee girl, 12

- By Daily Telegraph Reporter

THE death of a 12-year-old girl who drowned in a river in Greater Manchester could be reinvestigated after Andy Burnham, the city’s mayor, admitted public concern surrounding the tragedy was “unresolved”.

Shukri Yahye-abdi died after entering the Irwell river in Bury during a heatwave on June 27 last year.

In February, an inquest heard Shukri, who could not swim, visited the spot with two girls and was told “if you don’t get in the water, I’m going to kill you”, by one of them.

Shukri was born in Somalia and came to the UK as a refugee in 2017.

Zam Zam Ture, her mother, told the hearing, which has been adjourned, that she believed the girls were not her daughter’s friends.

Speaking to the BBC Asian Network, Mr Burnham said “Clearly it’s unresolved [be]cause of the nature of the level of concern.

“I will look into the case again and I will consider the call for a further investigation into it.”
