CSU head leads race to be German chancellor

-

Bavaria state leader Markus Söder, previously an outsider to become German chancellor, is now seen as favourite to replace Angela Merkel, according to a series of opinion polls.

Mr Söder, leader of the Christian Social Union, is backed by 64 per cent of voters, ahead of Social Democrat Olaf Scholz on 48 per cent.

Mrs Merkel has said she will stand down when her current term comes to an end next year.
