Further education
sir – Aged 19, I have recently become one of the youngest school governors in Britain. My aim is to tackle the cultural bias in our society against non-university education, as highlighted by Gavin Williamson (report, July 10).
This pandemic has emphasised how much our future depends on the success of the next generation. Thrusting students into ill-suited degree courses will damage both their finances and employment prospects. An apprenticeship, or jumping straight into full-time employment will suit some young people far better.
It is in our interests for the next generation to receive an education that is both relevant and enjoyable, and I urge students to consider their options before walking blindly into a university degree.
