Laying on of hands

sir – John Twitchen may be the father of the new Bishop of Horsham, the Rt Rev Ruth Bushyager, but he must be mistaken (Letters, July 21) in saying he saw the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop of York and the Bishop of London lay hands on her head as she knelt before them.

The Archbishop of York was not present, and the Archbishop of Canterbury specifically did not lay on hands, having explained beforehand why he would not be doing so.

The new bishop was consecrated by the Bishop of London assisted by the bishops of Guildford and Dover.
