Plenty of lolly

-

sir – One day in 1953, as I was waiting for the newspapers to arrive so that I could begin my paper round, a young boy came into the shop and asked for four penny lollies.

When he tried to pay for them, the newsagent told him that he did not have enough money. The boy insisted, saying that his mother had told him it would be enough. Upon further examination, the newsagent realised that the boy was paying with a groat (Letters, July 21), which had been initially mistaken for a silver threepenny piece.
