Churchyard gardeners

sir – I am sorry that the parishioners of Litcham (Letters, July 29) cannot find volunteers to keep their churchyard in good order.

In Nether Wallop we have holy gardening on the first Saturday of every month, when volunteers – by no means all churchgoers – turn out to strim, mow and tidy the large churchyard.

The provision of coffee and delicious home-made cakes has been an inducement, but the chief motivation has been the desire of villagers to retain the beauty of the village and its assets.
