Tributes timetable Pipers to lead worldwide salute to veterans of Far East campaign
6am: Waking up to Peace To signify the moment the United Kingdom woke up to peace on VJ Day in August 1945, military pipers will perform When the Battle’s O’er in significant locations around the world.
Armed Forces pipers will play the traditional Highland air at 6am on board
HMS Belfast in London and at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. They join earlier performances of the same tribute by troops in India, Australia, New Zealand and Nepal. 6.35am: Wreath laying
Ben Wallace, the Secretary of State for Defence, will lay a wreath at the
Cenotaph in London in a private ceremony in memory of all those who
served. 10.30am: National Service of Remembrance The Royal British Legion will host veterans of the Far East campaign for the National Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will join Second
World War veterans, their carers and their families to pay tribute to all those who fell during the Far East campaign.
The Prime Minister, the Secretary of State for Defence and the Chief of the Defence Staff will also be in attendance.
All three services of the Armed Forces will be represented. Personnel from HMS Prince of Wales will represent the Royal Navy and personnel from British Army regiments and units associated with the Far East campaign will be on parade. The Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment will provide music during the service.
The Royal Air
Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will also fly over the ceremony. The event, which has been adapted to ensure attendees can observe social distancing rules, will be broadcast live on BBC One. 11.30am until 5.30pm: Red Arrows fly-pasts The Royal Air Force Red Arrows will complete a series of fly-pasts over the capital cities of the four Home Nations. This is the first time the Red Arrows have visited every country in one day since the London 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games.
At refuelling stops in Scotland and Wales, veterans of the Second World
War will have the chance to meet the Red Arrows pilots and share stories of their service.
At the end of their tour, the
Red Arrows will fly directly over the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home to many Second World War veterans and three Burma Star recipients.
The Chelsea Pensioners will gather in front of the hospital to watch the tribute. 8.30pm VJ Day 75: The Nation’s Tribute More than 300 members of the Armed Forces will take part in a tribute at Horse Guards Parade, London.
The cultural tribute, featuring readings, music by military bands and dramatic visual projections, was developed by the BBC and the
Ministry of Defence for broadcast on BBC One. Joanna Lumley, the actress, will be joined by stars including Hugh Bonneville, Sheridan Smith, Paterson Joseph, Sir Bryn Terfel, Sir Willard White and Nicola Roberts to celebrate and commemorate the conclusion of the Second World War.
