Navy wreck found on seabed after 68 years

A former Navy boat that starred in a film has been discovered on the seabed 68 years after it sank.

The 75ft motor torpedo boat was the first all-aluminium Royal Navy vessel in the UK. It appeared in the 1951 film

Appointment with Venus – posing as a German E-boat – alongside stars David Niven and Glynis Johns. But the ill-fated MTB 539 sank into the Irish Sea while being towed and has remained on the sea floor for decades.

Scientists from Bangor University in North Wales have found its resting place using multibeam sonar technology.
