US threatens sanctions ‘snapback’ against Iran
Donald Trump said he plans a sanctions “snapback” on Iran after the UN Security Council rejected a US bid to extend an arms embargo on Tehran.
“We’ll be doing a snapback,” the US president said. “You’ll be watching it next week.” Although the US withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in 2018, it still considers itself a “participant” with the ability to force a return to sanctions if it considers that Iran has violated the deal.
Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s president, said the defeat of the embargo effort was a “humiliation” for the US.
