Rail fares ‘minefield’ threatens regions plan

Industry leaders and politician­s have warned that Boris Johnson risks falling short of his pledge to “level up” regions due to a “complicate­d and restrictiv­e” rail fare structure. The Rail Delivery Group said the system made it “difficult to offer the more flexible fares and ticketing options passengers will increasing­ly demand”. There are 55,000 different rail fares on offer, and Sir Patrick Mcloughlin, the former transport secretary, said the system was a “minefield of complicati­ons”.
