Rail fares ‘minefield’ threatens regions plan
Industry leaders and politicians have warned that Boris Johnson risks falling short of his pledge to “level up” regions due to a “complicated and restrictive” rail fare structure. The Rail Delivery Group said the system made it “difficult to offer the more flexible fares and ticketing options passengers will increasingly demand”. There are 55,000 different rail fares on offer, and Sir Patrick Mcloughlin, the former transport secretary, said the system was a “minefield of complications”.
