It wasn’t London, but marathon raises £16.1m

London Marathon run­ners raised £16.1 mil­lion for more than 2,000 char­i­ties af­ter thou­sands took part in the 26.2-mile race in their own way.

Around 45,000 peo­ple from across the UK and 109 other coun­tries signed up to run in the marathon vir­tu­ally, af­ter the race, orig­i­nally planned for April 26, changed for­mat be­cause of Covid-19. While more than 100 elite run­ners ran in St James’s Park, in London on Sun­day, thou­sands of par­tic­i­pants pounded their lo­cal streets, bat­tling rain and gale-force winds to raise the money.

The pub­lic bal­lot to run in next year’s marathon on Oct 3 is open un­til 5pm this Fri­day.
