Cambridge holds unconscious bias class as black intake triples

- By Tony Diver

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY has announced it is rolling out “unconscious bias” and race awareness training to all its staff, as it recorded a tripling of its black student intake in three years.

The university said many of i ts departments were exploring options to “diversify the curriculum” and expand the range of authors students study in arts subjects.

All staff will be asked to attend “race awareness and unconscious bias training” in an attempt to reduce incidents of racism on its campus.

This year’s figures show 37 black students have been admitted to Cambridge colleges, an increase of just over 50 per cent on last year. Prof Graham Virgo, the university’s pro-vice- chancellor, said the number of black students had more than tripled in three years.

Cambridge was last year accused of racism after a non-black lecturer read out the N-word from a passage in class. A PHD candidate left the university in protest.
