sir – When I was a child in the Forties, the milkman or coalman’s horse often left “presents” in the road. My grandfather would give me a bucket and shovel (to my friends’ amusement) to collect this precious manure for the tomatoes he grew in boxes on the shed roof. The tomatoes were very good.
