A modest proposal

-

sir – Edward Cartner (Letters, January 1) says his marriage proposal was less than romantic.

I’ve been married twice but never proposed to. I proposed to my first husband after knowing him four weeks and we married nine months later. Bearing in mind the old saying, “Marry in haste, repent at leisure”, when that ended badly I resolved to do things differently.

However, after living with my partner for 11 years, I eventually asked him if we would ever get married. He replied rather grudgingly. “Yes, but not this summer.”

We married the following summer. That was 15 years ago.
