CADETS FIGHT IN PYJAMAS.

-

The auxiliaries put up a splendid fight. Men who had been out on night duty jumped from their beds, rushed out in their pyjamas, and fought side by side with others who were fully dressed. The commander of the company of auxiliaries had a very narrow escape. A bomb passed through a window while he was making his way downstairs and knocked off his cap, but did not explode. The attacker, who was shot, with a bomb in his hand, was just about to release the pin when he was hit, and fell outside of the back entrance to the hotel. Two other men were wounded, but it is not yet known whether they were members of the attacking party or civilians on their way to work. The dockers, who were present in large numbers when the battle opened, fled in all directions to take cover. In the meantime, the auxiliary police rushed forth in twos and threes and kept up a brisk fight, pursuing their assailants and scattering any groups of men whose presence caused suspicion.

The company stationed at the North Wall Hotel has been engaged in searching incoming and outgoing steamers and in watching suspected persons. It has been stationed there since Easter, and this is the first attack that has been made upon it. In addition to the bombs of various makes, from the egg bomb to much larger types, the attackers seem to have used various acids, which were thrown into the premises in bottles, as well as petrol and some bottles full of a volatile fluid, probably explosive. But these failed to do much damage. The fight caused great excitement in the city, and the highly successful resistance of the auxiliary police is greatly praised.
