When nature is allowed to colonise the garden
SIR – I feel sorry for readers who prefer artificial turf or a closely mown lawn to allowing nature to take its course in their gardens (Letters, June 9).
They are missing out on much interest and beauty, but are also failing to promote a habitat for insects – including butterflies, bees and other pollinators – which in turn provide food for birds. Our lawn supports a large unmown patch of ox-eye daisies, sorrel and red clover. The rest is covered with small clovers, daisies, speedwells and others. The garden is alive with insects and birds, and gives us endless joy.
