Thompson wins bet with Aussie over medal hauls

-

Daley Thompson has prevailed in a long-standing bet with Steve Waugh, the former Australian cricketer, after Britain’s success at the Tokyo Games.

Team GB finished with 65 medals, while Australia trailed with 46, meaning the former decathlete, who won two Olympic golds for Britain in 1980 and 1984, came out on top.

The bet stated that the person from the winning country would have dinner bought for them by the loser.

Thompson said in a joint interview with Waugh on Radio 5 Live: “In the last couple of decades, Steve has actually been getting involved with the Australian Olympic team and as we both were really interested in how each of our teams were doing, we would have little bets on it.

“This bet is for a meal next time we meet, so hopefully it is going to be somewhere very expensive.”

In an interview before the London 2012 Games, Thompson revealed that the pair had planned the same bet.
