Mental health funding boost for ‘struggling’ veterans

- By Lizzie Roberts Health reporter

ARMED Forces veterans will benefit from a £2.7million funding boost to mental health support following an “incredibly challenging” Afghanistan campaign, the Government has announced.

The additional money will be used to expand Op Courage, the specialist mental health service from the NHS for Armed Forces veterans.

Leo Docherty, Minister for Defence People and Veterans, urged veterans to access the specialist support.

“This targeted increase of support will help those veterans who may be struggling, particularly in light of recent events in Afghanistan,” he said.

Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, announced today that tailored support will be offered to those dealing with complex mental or physical trauma, or alcohol and substance misuse.

Around 38,000 Armed Forces members, including veterans, suffer from alcohol and substance misuse.

“Our serving Armed Forces and veterans represent the very best of us, with recent events in Afghanistan yet another reminder of their dedication and sacrifice,” Mr Javid said.

“Op Courage already provides excellent support for veterans’ mental health, but [there] is more we can do to get the care and treatment to those who have given up so much to protect us.”

The funding comes on top of £6million announced by the Government last summer for 100 military charities to provide extra support for veterans, serving personnel and their families during the pandemic.

As part of the new support, care coordinators will be appointed as a main point of contact for veterans with the aim of reducing suicide rates, by helping them to access health and care services, and discuss issues with doctors and other care professionals.

Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, said: “The campaign in Afghanistan was incredibly challenging but our personnel displayed the highest levels of bravery and professionalism while securing the rights and freedoms of millions.”
