York freshers forced to go to Hull and back

-

York University has offered freshers accommodation 40 miles away in Hull after student housing ran out.

New students have been told they will be housed an hour’s drive away from campus because there are “no available rooms across the city of York, either on or off campus to offer you”.

Those affected will be offered a 10 per cent rent reduction and free transport is being arranged, the Russell Group university said.

The shortage has been blamed on a surge in demand for rooms after record levels of 18-year-olds accepted university places this year.

Monty, a first-year student at York, said: “As you can probably imagine, I’m not most pleased about it. Living an hour away during Freshers’ Week is not ideal.”
