Drivers don’t want smart motorways, says poll
The majority of motorists want smart motorways scrapped as they feel less safe on them than on roads with hard shoulders, an RAC poll has found.
A survey of 2,600 drivers found that over 60 per cent believe the scheme should be abandoned, while retaining technology which manages traffic flows and reports breakdowns. Only a quarter supported the continuation of current government policy, which is to stick to four permanent running lanes and no hard shoulder.
The RAC research also indicated a sharp increase in safety concerns about smart motorways, with 24 per cent of drivers citing this as one of their top overall motoring concerns.
